NPO Yushnoye is to develop of Mayak satellite launch vehicles based on technologies used on the Tsiklon
and the Zenit 2 booster. The Mayak launcher family will be powered by two
or four NPO Energomash RD-120K engines, a second stage using one RD-120
and a third stage powered by a Yushnoye RD-8 (4 chambers) = RD-120 vernier 11D513.
Mayak-12 will be able to place 1.7 tons into 500 km SSO with a first flight
planned in about 2005. A longer Mayak-23 would be able to loft 3.0 tons into GTO.
Yushnoye says it is considering launch sites at Alcantara and at Overberg Test Range
(South Africa).
